During a Matwork class the exercises focus on balance, posture, core strength and flexibility. You are taken through a sequence of movements starting from standing and finishing on the floor.
You are taken through a sequence of movements at standing, sitting and lying on the floor, using various items of equipment.
Matwork Pilates focuses on strengthening the stomach and back muscles. This aligns the spine and improves posture. The long term benefit of this is you learn to reprogram the way you hold yourself, and, as you go through life, you will be stronger, more stable and less prone to injury.
Mats are provided along with equipment such as blocks, foam rollers, stability balls, chi balls and exercise bands. These are used to assist, progress or modify an exercise, making sure each exercise is tailored to the individual.
Class sizes are limited to 13, and all clients are asked to fill out a health screening form, before attending a session so that advice can be given for specific issues.
Doing Pilates has changed the way I hold my body and has increased my awareness of the unhelpful postural habits I have got into. I used to have a lot of lower back ache and since I have been doing Pilates I have not had any backache at all. The tutors are very good at identifying when exercises are not being done correctly and they take a practical and hands on approach to teaching which is at once respectful and effective. The atmosphere in the class is warm and supportive.

I was recommended to do 12 months of Pilates to help recover from major abdominal surgery. Two and a half years later, I still attend every week! Not only did it help my body regain strength after surgery, but it's made me so much more aware of my posture and the areas of strength and weakness within my body.
